A wellness exam—or annual exam—is a routine visit with a caregiver to stay informed about your body and overall health.

It’s recommended to have a standard exam on a yearly basis. But what do these exams include and why are they so important?

Here’s what you can expect from your annual exam at Cache Valley Women’s Center at the Lodge in Logan, Utah

What To Expect At Your Annual Exam

As part of routine procedure, our staff at Cache Valley Women’s Center will start by taking your vitals and measuring your weight and height. Next, you’ll have a routine physical exam that includes answering questions related to your health. This usually includes basic details about your diet, exercise, work, and current lifestyle.

It is our goal to help you feel comfortable and at ease sharing personal information to help us better understand your overall health. And as always, your information will be kept completely private.

Pelvic and breast exams will then be given for most women. These exams are usually for those over the age of 21, but in some cases, younger. The pelvic exam consists of a simple check of your reproductive organs including the vulva, vagina, cervix, and uterus. This exam is critical to ensuring you remain in good health.

Your physician will also conduct a pap smear every three to five years to check for certain cancers, ovarian cysts, and sexually transmitted infections. During this test, cells are collected from your cervix using a long swab. Our physicians make this procedure quick and as painless as possible.

A breast exam is recommended annually alongside monthly self exams. Being familiar with the look and feel of your breasts is essential for identifying any pain, lumps, or abnormal changes that could be related to breast cancer. If you notice any abnormal or concerning changes to your breasts, let your healthcare provider know.

As part of your annual exam, Cache Valley Women’s Center can also provide vaccines like Gardasil for the HPV virus that is known to cause some cervical and uterine cancers.
